If you ever return to your car to find a strange object left on your windshield late at night, you should think twice before taking the time to remove it, based on this 19-year-old woman’s alarming recent experience in a mall parking lot. Ashley Hardacre from Flint, Michigan, got into her car after finishing a late night shift at the Genesee Valley Center Mall when she noticed a flannel shirt draped over her windshield, according to WSB-TV. Instead of getting out to remove the clothing item, she knew something didn’t feel right, so she drove to a safe place instead. It turns out, her instincts were right. Ashley wrote about her experience in a Facebook post that went viral, with more than 100,000 shares, but has since been made private.
“I used my windshield wipers to try to get them off but the shirt was completely wrapped around my wiper blade,” Ashley explained in the post. “I don’t know why the shirt was on my car but it had to have been intentional the way it was put on there.” The teen driver’s parents had warned her that this scary windshield trick was happening in the area as a way to lure women out of their cars. “There were two cars near me and one was running,” she wrote. “So I immediately felt uneasy and knew I couldn’t get out to get it off.”
Ashley decided to drive away from the parking lot and pulled over to remove the shirt as soon as she felt safe. She later notified mall security of the incident and they now escort the young woman to her car when she’s working late night shifts. The college student hopes her Facebook post gives a fair warning to anyone else who might find themselves in the same situation.
“I posted about the incident to inform others that it can happen to anyone and that they shouldn’t fall for it,” Ashley told CBS News. “A lot of people think it is fake or it won’t happen to them. But you can never be too safe.” Ashley’s story serves as an important reminder that you should always be cautious when driving alone at night, and that it never hurts to trust your gut.
